Regular NVPS meetings are usually held on the 4th Monday of each month, except December. We have informal social time from 6:30 pm, the business meeting at 7:00 and the main event, which is either a presentation on a photographic topic or a critique of members pictures, at about 7:15. Meetings generally finish by 9:00.
Monday January 30: The first regular meeting of 2012 in our new temporary location, the Napa Valley Art Association, 1520 Behrens Street. (Note that this is the 5th Monday in Jan, not the 4th.). This will be a critique by professional photographers and teachers Susan and Neil Silverman. Check out their website for spectacular images covering a very broad range of subjects. To encourage our members to have a similarly broad outlook there will be an open theme. Submit 2 digital images or bring prints. Digital images should be sent to Michael Schaer by Sunday.
Friday February 24, 5-8 pm: Grand Reception for the Annual Exhibition at Yountville Community Center and Silent Auction to benefit Clinic Ole. Silent auction images will be in two separate groups closing at 6:30 and 7:30. Come and enjoy photos, food, wine and good company. This is sponsored by Yountville Arts and there will be a nominal charge of $5 for non-exhibitors to help cover the cost of the event.
Fri/Sat/Sun February 24/25/26: A special event linked to the Annual Exhibition, a 1-weekend show and sale at Yountville Community Center. Participation is open to all members but a prior commitment is required. Full details can be found here. If you are not showing, stop by to support your fellow members and bring some friends. Opening hours 5-8 Fri, 10-5 Sat, 11-4 Sun.
Monday February 27: The regular NVPS meeting, which again will be held at the Napa Valley Art Association, 1520 Behrens Street. This will feature a presentation on HDR by NVPS member and professional photographer Michael Schaer. He uses Photomatix to create his images but the principles apply to any HDR program. Some striking and dramatic examples are shown on his Flickr site.
Members are asked to note the following suggestions to facilitate and enhance critiques of their images:
- Always aim to submit images that reflect your best recent work.
- Preferably submit images that fit the selected theme, which is normally based on the critiquer's specialty.
- If you don’t have images that fit the theme, you may send in your best shots anyway for showing in an “off-theme” category.
- The critiquer will be encouraged to comment on lighting, composition, cropping, etc. and then to ask the photographer what their intention was.
- Be prepared to speak up at the meeting - let the critiquer and the audience know what you are trying to achieve and give a context to the image.
